Gymnasium Winter ‘Concert’ 2020

Datum:
Music classes, like all the other classes in the Gymnasium, have been strongly affected by the Corona Virus restrictions. Singing and playing wind instruments have been forbidden indoors for much of the fall term. Even playing instruments like guitars and keyboards, which thankfully we were allowed to do this fall, presented new challenges with the need to sterilize every piece of equipment in between classes. Assembling a large group of people to enjoy a normal concert this year was clearly not possible. Keeping all of these issues in mind, we started planning alternative scenarios for the traditional Winter Concert, and in the end decided to create a video playlist featuring mostly instrumental performances of winter and Christmas songs. Using equipment and software that was new for many of us, working indoors and out, we practiced and experimented until we found a way to create videos of each class performing. We did our best to create a festive atmosphere in the music room, with strands of Christmas lights, and more dramatic portable stage lights to backlight the rear wall. Students from the art department contributed the lovely paper stars and Christmas light boxes that we used as decoration. And with the ‘stage’ set, we recorded each class performing at least one instrumental song to add to the playlist. Students led a huge part of the effort with the recording and editing of the videos.

The classes as always had many other creative ideas for songs that we could have done, but since their plans usually involved singing, or even dancing closely together, those ideas that we started working on will unfortunately have to wait for next year. But I am so proud of what we have created together, and want to thank the students for their enthusiasm and positive attitudes throughout this whole process. Thank you also to the teachers and staff for their help and support. We hope you enjoy the concert, it is available for Gymnasium families to view on Microsoft Stream throughout the holiday break. All the best to you and your loved ones in this unusual holiday time! (text by MH)
